Annual Fall Closure

This Saturday, October 8, is the final wine dinner of the season. It will feature the outstanding wines of Maryhill Winery, winner of the WA Winery of the Year Award. Russell Bradshaw, will include a house-made English muffin with lemon curd and Larkhaven Farms New Moon goatling cheese paired with the Maryhill Proprietor's Reserve Chardonnay, 2008. Saturday night, August 13, the Sun Mountain Lodge Dining Room will be featuring a fine four course dinner paired with the wines of Tsillan Cellars from Lake Chelan. Owner Bob Jankelson will be on hand to pour and talk about his wines from 5:30 to 8:00 pm. The first course is seared Taylor Bay scallops with vanilla polenta paired with the Tsillan Cellars 2008 Gewurztraminer. This will be followed by deconstructed cherry antelope pie with hazelnut streusel and the 2008 Tsillan Cellars Sinestra, a blend of Sangiovese, Barbera and Nebbiolo. Each weekend Executive Chef J. Russell Bradshaw, C.E.C. and Executive Sous Chef Pete McKinney put together a new and innovative prix fixe menu. Wine Manager Don Elsing then pairs a selection of fine wines to go with the meal. This weekend the menu is: Grilled Romaine with cucumber pearls, grape tomatoes, bleu cheese crumbles, toasted Macadamia nuts and fresh blueberries with a balsamic reduction blood orange vinaigrette. The wine pairing is a 3 ounce pour of the Columbia Valley Goose Ridge Riesling 2007. The second course is a Sauteed Blue Nose Snapper with grapefruit marmalade, carrot and pea puree and an endive and mushroom ragout paired with a 3 ounce pour of the 2007 Columbia Valley Townshend Sauvignon Blanc. This weekend is a wine lover's bonanza in Winthrop. Saturday June 11 is the seventh annual Winthrop Wine Festival. '49er Days

This weekend is the 66th annual Winthrop '49er Days Celebration. Come on over for tons of family fun. On Friday at noon over 100 horses and riders plus 20 horse drawn wagons will parade through downtown following their four night Ride to Rendezvous. That will be followed at 7pm by the Dollar Watch Jamboree featuring Western music, storytelling, cowboy poetry and comedy. Saturday has the best small town parade in the West, beginning at 11am. Following the parade there will be old timey games in front of Sheri's Sweet Shoppe including an egg toss, pie eating contest, hula-hoop contest and rock/paper/scissors competition. In the Winthrop Park there will be the Packer Rendezvous with backcountry camps set up and demonstrations of campfire cooking, camp skills, storytelling and music. Plus a bratwurst barbeque. More Spring News!

We were booked on Moccasin Lake Friday therefore Kevin guided two men fly fishing on Patterson Lake (it’s now a year-round fishery so we could fish on the 29th. Today, the 30th, is opening day for most lakes in Eastern Washington). The two were inexperienced fly fisherman yet had a great day. They landed 36 Rainbow trout and 5 Kokanee. They played twice as many fish as they landed. The trout ranged from 14 inches to 18 ½ inches. Kokanee were dinks.

As many of you know, trails are starting to melt out. We had our first guest rent a bike yesterday and complete a small loop. He rode Sunnyside and back on Beaver Pond. Yes, he ran into some snow towards the Homestead end. Patterson Lake trail is melted out and could be Mt. biked out and back. Rader Creek is still too snowy. Yes, hiking is still the best activity on the trails. Especially with the small early wildflowers out.

Kevin hopes to ski the top of Thompson Ridge today and will send a picture of that later.

Horseback riding started Saturday.

Pretty nice variety. Not many places can offer snow, wildflowers, hiking, biking, horseback riding and kick ass fishing all in one weekend.

World Championships, cont'd

The team of Sadie Bjornsen and Kikkan Randall finished 9th in the team classic sprint race in Oslo. On the men's side, Torin Koos and Andy Newell finished 10th. The men's race was won by the Canadians, their first gold at a world championships. The Canadian women also skied well, finishing in 6th place.

NCAA Ski Championships

The NCAA Ski Championships will be taking place in Stowe, Vermont from March 9-12. Two alumni of the Methow Valley Nordic Team have qualified. Skiing for the University of Alaska, Anchorage will be Eric Bjornsen. And competing for Montana State University will be Casey Kutz. Good luck to both of them.

World's Update

The Nordic World Championships are continuing in Oslo, Norway. The Methow's Sadie Bjornsen has been doing great. She qualified for the heats in the classic sprint, ending up 24th, the top North American woman. Yesterday she skied in the 10K classic race and wound up 29th, the second American after Holly Brooks from Seattle. Great job ladies.

The World Nordic Champioships started today in Oslo, Norway. Sadie Bjornsen, an alumnus of the Methow Valley Nordic Team, will be there representing the USA. Sadie has been skiing in Europe this winter with the US Ski Team. Last week she finished 51st in the 10K classic race at Drammen, Norway and was the top American finisher. She also finished 42nd in the freestyle sprint race, which was won my her teammate Kikkan Randall. World Junior Nordic Ski Championships

Another update on the World Junior Cross Country Ski and Biathlon Championships. Today Casey Smith from Winthrop and a member of the Methow Valley Junior Nordic team finished 30th in the 12.5K individual biathlon event in Nove Mesto, Slovakia. Casey was the top American finisher. Yesterday Sadie Bjornsen finished 17th in the 15K pursuit at the U23 World Championships in Otepaa, Estonia. Last Friday, her brother Eric finished 14th in the 1.4K classic sprint race in the World Junior Championships. Both were the top American finishers in their events. Congratulations to Casey, Sadie and Eric, and to the Methow Valley Junior Nordic race program for training such great skiers.

On Thursday Brian Gregg of Mazama completed the 30 KM men's freestyle race in 6th place, an excellent result. On the last day of racing, Sat. Jan. 8, Methow Valley skiers again had a great day. Torrin Koos won the men's freestyle sprint, while Sam Naney, another Methow Valley Nordic Team alum, finished in the top ten at number 9. On the ladies side, Sadie Bjornsen had another great race, gaining her third podium finish of the Championships, by finishing in third place. Great job to all these fine racers!

Methow X-C Skiers Win at U.S. Nationals

It's been a big week so far for Methow Valley skiers at the U.S. National Cross Country Ski Championships in Rumford, ME. On Sunday Torin Koos, formerly of Leavenworth and now skiing for the Methow Olympic Development squad, won the men's classic sprint race. Finishing fourth was up and coming star Eric Bjornsen of Mazama, now skiing for the University of Alaska, Anchorage. On the women's side, his sister Sadie, skiing for Alaska Pacific University, also finished in fourth place, but was the third American finisher. And today, in the race of her life, Sadie won the women's 10K classic race, finishing 31 seconds ahead of her nearest competitor! Congratulations to all.

Big Fish at Moccasin Lake

The fall fishing season has opened at Moccasin Lake. Bret Alumbaugh, our Activities Director and Fly Fishing Guide, says the first few days of fishing have been great. The lake is stocked with a Kamloops trout/Steelhead hybrid and a small population of German Brown trout. Fish average 3.5 to 7 pounds, with some even larger. This weekend is also the annual running of MVSTA's Cutthroat Classic. This is one of the great mountain running events anywhere. Along the Pacific Crest Trail from Rainy Pass to Cutthroat Lake. 11.1 miles with 2,000 feet of elevation gain on the way up to Cutthroat Pass. Stunning views at every turn. This weekend the town of Winthrop is hosting the 12th Annual North Cascades Oldtime Fiddlers Contest. The contest will take place on Saturday, August 28th in the Winthrop Park by the Big Red Barn. Over the years the contest has hosted top notch fiddlers from all over the Northwest and as far away as Texas, North Carolina, Georgia and Colorado. Brad Pinkerton, contest chair, says "we have changed some of the standard fiddle contest rules to loosen our contest up and make it more fun for both the fiddlers and the audience." Fiddling starts at 9am. Admission is $12 for adults, $6 for seniors and kids 12 and under are free. And once again, the Giant Insect Contest will take place at the noon lunch break. Because of the rains, we have an abundance of braising greens as well as baby beets which we are serving roasted; beans; baby cipollini onions and baby leeks served grilled. Sweet peas are out, so we have changed our seared sea scallop dish to include mascarpone mashed potatoes with a sweet pea sauce, a melange of local organic roasted bell peppers and foraged mushrooms. We are also featuring local Crown S Ranch natural chicken prepared as seen on KING5 TV's NW Backroads show with Sunny Pine Farms goat cheese, spinach, Bluebird Grain Farms emmer "risotto", apple cider sauce and local organic vegetables. As of this morning, the North Cascade Highway, aka Highway 20, is temporarily closed due to the snow yesterday. They will be assessing the snowpack stability today. Spring Activities

This just in from the Activities Department: Hour and a half horseback rides have started. Enjoy the beautiful spring flowers from atop your mount as you traverse the Sun Mountain Lodge trails. $35 for adults, $30 for kids. Mountain bikes are available in the Activity Shop. All the lower trails are open. $15 for two hours, includes helmet. Fishing is open down at Patterson Lake and there are rowboats, canoes and paddleboats for rent. $10 per hour. Whitewater rafting on the Methow River starts Saturday, May 1. $90 for adults, $80 for kids. Includes wetsuit, booties and lunch. Introduction to Fly Casting classes are avalaible from Kevin and Bret in the Activities Shop, $40. Tennis courts, 2 hot tubs, volleyball and horseshoes are all open and ready to go. The spring flowers are coming out! Lots of yellowbells, bluebells and spring beauties. The arrowleaf balsamroot (aka sunflowers) are starting to show up as well. The big white serviceberry bushes are in full bloom too. The early season, lime green aspen leaves are leafing out. It all makes for a wonderful profusion of color. Come up and enjoy.

Eight members of the Methow Valley Junior Nordic Ski Team will be travelling to Presque Isle, Maine next week to compete in the Junior Olympics. Racers must qualify over the course of the season to be able to participate. Qualifying races were held here in the Methow, Bend, OR, Soldier Hollow, UT and Mt Spokane. Representing the Methow Valley on the Pacific Northwest Region Team will be Marc LeDuc, Evan Turner, Matty Coleman, Casey Smith, Jacqueline O'Keefe, Sage Abate, Kelsey Dickinson and Nina Ekblad. Spring Closure

Got an email from Jay Lucas, executive director of MVSTA, regarding our January weather. Comments from Jim on the Cliff Mass Weather Blog indicate that January was the warmest on record for Winthrop. It averaged 29.6 degrees and beat older records by nearly a degree. Only 7 days in January had high temperatures that remained below freezing. Snowfall was near normal at 20.8 inches. Precip was 1.11 inches above normal at 3.11. So if you thought it was warm last month, you were right.

Today in Hinterzarten, Germany, Methow Valley native Sadie Bjornson finished 13th in the 1Km freestyle sprint at the U23 World Championships. Yesterday her brother Erik finished 23rd in the same event at the World Junior Championships, also in Hinterzarten. Congratulations to Sadie and Erik! Saturday's sprint races were an absolute gem. Beautiful sunshine and not a cloud in the sky. North Central Washington racers were dominate. Torin Koos (Leavenworth) and Laura Valaas (Wenatchee) were the winners. On Sunday up at Loop Loop, they again took home the top honors on a very difficult waxing day. Brian Gregg of Winthrop had a great race and finished 2nd. If you ever get a chance to attend a Super Tour race, do it. These skiers are awesome!

Fog, light rain, dark, gloomy. The weather is not the most beautiful in the world. But, yesterday I classic skied on no-wax skis up Thompson Ridge. The glide was good, the grip was good. It was very quiet and peaceful. I didn't see a soul in an hour of skiing. And, even better, it was a very pleasant temperature. I didn't even wear a coat. So, looks can be deceiving, get out and go for a ski.

This weekend is the USSA Super Tour races in Winthrop. Two members of the US Olympic team will be on hand: Torin Koos from Leavenworth and Laura Valaas from Wenatchee. In addition, two members of the Canadian National Team, Shayla Swanson and Drew Goldsack, will be racing. Philip Boit, the sole member of the Kenyan National Cross Country Ski Team (who trained in the Methow last winter) will also be in attendance. Yesterday Brian Gregg placed 5th in the 30K classic mass start race at the U.S. Senior National Cross Country Ski Championships in Anchorage, AK. Way to go Brian, that is awesome! We received about seven inches of new snow on Monday. All the trails have been groomed and the skiing and snowshoeing are great. Now the sun is out and all is well in the world. Speaking of the world, four of our Methow Valley nordic skiers are at the U.S. Senior National Cross Country Ski Championships in Anchorage, AK as we speak. Sadie Bjornsen, Eric Bjornsen, Sam Naney and Brian Gregg all were members of the Methow Valley Junior Nordic Team and honed their skills on all the trails in the Valley. All four of them qualified for the heats in the freestyle sprint on Saturday, with Brian finishing 8th and Eric 10th. Monday was the freestyle race, 10K for women, 15K for men. New Year's Eve Party

It's party time at Sun Mountain Lodge. Back to supply the music is the outstanding 12 string guitarist David Lee Howard. He has played numerous times at Sun Mountain and is always a crowd pleaser. Also on tap is a four course dinner in the Dining Room from Executive Chef J. Russell Bradshaw and his team. And for the kids there is a sleigh ride and dinner followed by a Carnival Party. So come on up and get the new year off to a great start at Sun Mountain Lodge.

ACF Apprenticeship Program Approval

Sun Mountain Lodge has been approved by the American Culinary Federation as a culinary apprenticeship site. Congratulations to Executive Chef J. Russell Bradshaw for achieving this distinction and setting up the program. In addition to our current program of hosting culinary school externs, we will now also offer a full-blown culinary apprenticeship program.

SNOW! (but not much)

Received a trace of new snow today. Helps to whiten things up. Skiing is still good on Little Wolf, Thompson Ridge, the Rendezvous (Cub Creek side) and Mazama. I skied Couger Bait today on classic no-wax and it was very fun. More snow is in the immediate forecast, so let's keep our fingers crossed.

Local's ski day

I personally went out and checked on the ski trails yesterday and ran into most of the Valley. I skated out Little Wolf to the Homestead. The coverage was excellent, the surface was fast but not icy, and the classic tracks looked good. On the way I ran into Dr. Joe Jensen, our local family practice doc. Then around the corner I bumped into Ann Henry, wife of Joe's predecessor at Methow Valley Family Practice, Doc Henry. (Ann, I haven't seen knickers like that in ages!). Then Mike Kutz and Steve Devin skied by. Their daughters, Casey and Jamie, both race for Montana State University. Then I met Scott Johnston, coach of the Methow Olympic Development Team, teaching a classic clinic for the Methow Vally Nordic Club. And finally Dick Ewing and Brett Alumbaugh, two of our instructors for Don Portman's Methow Valley Ski School, were out honing their skills. (Brett was doing that most difficult of tasks, teaching his own kids!). So don't let the local's have all the fun, come out and ski.

Santa, Cookies and Songs

Yesterday's MV Nordic Team ski-with-santa and cookie decorating session at the Lodge was a big success. Tonight the Cascadia choir sings in the main lobby at 5:00 pm.
